We invite all stepfamilies and supporters to join in celebrating National Stepfamily Awareness Day and the formation of the National Stepfamily Alliance:
- Enter: 'Living in a Stepfamily' Writing Competition and 'My Stepfamily' Drawing Competition by Monday 13th August 2007. Great prizes! See attached entry form for details. For more information, contact 03 9481 1500.
- Organise your own get-together - for example, invite friends for dinner. Plan a picnic or barbeque in a local park.
- Plan a family activity for your own stepfamily, doing something you all enjoy.
- Register your event so we can all share in each other's celebrations - post details on www.stepfamily.asn.au/stepfamilyday/
National Stepfamily Awareness Day is an initiative of the National Stepfamily Alliance, which has been formed as a joint project of the State Stepfamily Associations to develop a national network and national voice for stepfamilies. For too long, stepfamilies in Australia have been discounted, but stepfamilies have lots to offer Australian society. They demonstrate flexibility, respect, and ability to adjust creatively to change. One in every five families is a stepfamily, but half of these with non-resident children are hidden - not counted in the Census.
National Stepfamily Awareness Day offers stepfamilies a great opportunity to honour their stepfamily and increase community awareness of stepfamilies.
National Stepfamily Awareness Day also invites the Australian Government to value all family types, recognise and welcome second families, provide adequate community supports to prevent the cycle of needless family breakdown and recognise that repartnering is hard and complex work.
