Stepfamilies Australia is a partnership between the Stepfamily Associations of Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania, formed in July 2007 and incorporated in 2008.
Stepfamily Association of Victoria (SAVI) commenced as a self-help support group in 1981 and remained a volunteer network for 16 years. Its co-founder Margaret Howden further co-developed the organisation with Irene Gerrard, establishing an office in 1997.
SAVI became a respected and professionally-resourced organisation that provided information, support and education for stepfamilies and training for professionals. SAVI contributed its staff, resources and infrastructure to the formation of Stepfamilies Australia in 2010 with branches across Australia.
