Stepfamily Training for Practitioners

Stepfamilies Australia is offering training to family relationships practitioners in each state and territory from September 2009 through May 2010, in a project funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

10 one day workshops for family or group work will be available  to increase organisations and practitioners responsiveness to and understanding of the needs of Australian stepfamilies. Follow up consultations will also be available to a proportion of participants.

Evaluation of  2007/08 national stepfamily training workshops clearly showed the workshops’ value in enhancing stepfamily-inclusive practice. Participants noted that the complex interaction of stepfamily structure and relationship dynamics presented unique challenges for them as workers, and left the workshops feeling much better equipped to respond well.

Participants can expect to:

  • Gain insights into the stepfamily as a unique family form, and the implications of this for practice
  • Gain creative ideas for working with stepfamilies and
  • Link empowering theoretical approaches with practice.

Workshops will be offered in conjunction with community partners hosting the workshops in either regional or capital cities.
